How to Choose Hetian Jade: A Practical Buyer's Checklist

Hetian jade (a type of nephrite) is graded on several qualities at once. Once you know what to look for, comparing pieces becomes far easier. Use this checklist before you buy.

1. Texture & "oiliness" (the most important factor)

The hallmark of fine Hetian nephrite is a dense, fine-grained structure with a soft, almost oily lustre — collectors call it youxing(oiliness). Hold the piece to the light and tilt it: top material glows warmly and feels "wet", while lower grades look dry, chalky or grainy.

2. Colour & evenness

White ("mutton-fat"), even green (碧玉), and clean lavender or smoky-purple tones are prized. What matters most is evenness — a uniform, saturated colour is worth more than a patchy one. Beware of overly bright, artificial-looking greens.

3. Purity (inclusions & cotton)

Look for distracting black spots, cracks, or heavy white "cotton". A few natural characteristics are normal and prove the stone is real, but large cracks reduce both durability and value.

4. Translucency

Gentle translucency adds beauty and value, but Hetian nephrite is prized more for its warm, dense glow than for glassy transparency. Don't confuse it with jadeite, which can be far more transparent.

5. Workmanship & setting

Crisp, intentional carving and a clean 18K gold or 925 silver setting add value. Check that drill holes are neat, surfaces are well polished, and metalwork is secure.

6. Certification & treatment

Only buy natural, untreated (Type A) jade, and ask for an independent certificate on fine pieces. If a deal looks too cheap for its apparent quality, assume treatment until proven otherwise.

Quick field test

• Tilt to the light — look for a warm, oily glow.
• Feel the weight — nephrite is dense and cool to the touch.
• Inspect evenly under daylight, not just warm shop lighting.
• Ask: origin, treatment status, and certificate.
