Hetian Jade Price: What Drives the Value of Nephrite

"How much should Hetian jade cost?" is the most common question we hear. There is no single answer, because nephrite is graded on several factors at once. Understanding them lets you compare pieces fairly instead of guessing.

1. Texture and "oiliness"

The single biggest driver of Hetian nephrite value is its fine, oily-looking texture. Top material has an almost greasy lustre and a dense, uniform structure with no visible grain. Coarser, drier stone is far more affordable.

2. Colour

White ("mutton-fat") and even, saturated green (碧玉 / green nephrite) command premiums, as do clean lavender and smoky-purple tones. What matters most is evenness — patchy or dull colour lowers value.

3. Origin

• Xinjiang (and田) material is the classic source and the most prized.
• Russian nephrite offers excellent white and green material at strong value, and is widely used in fine jewelry.
• Qinghai nephrite tends to be more translucent and accessible.

Origin is a price factor, not a quality verdict — a superb Russian stone easily outperforms a mediocre Xinjiang one.

4. Translucency, size and workmanship

Gentle translucency, larger size and skilled carving or setting (for example 18K gold mounting) all add value. Hand-finished detail costs more than mass production.

5. Treatment — the dealbreaker

Only buy natural, untreated (Type A) jade. Dyed or polymer-filled stone may look cheap-and-cheerful but has little lasting value. Always ask for an independent certificate. Every fine piece we sell is natural and certified.
